Founder: Andrea Dais Lewis PhD
Out of a desire to serve God through women’s ministry, Virtuous Pearl was conceived by Andrea Lewis. After experiencing loss of a baby, marriage and parent, Andrea was called to help other women who may be going through similar challenges. Using her experiences from planning other successful retreats, Andrea launched her vision from God of an annual interdenominational women’s retreat and seasonal activities to bring together Christian women from various walks of life.
Andrea is an educator who values and models academic excellence. After graduating summa cum laude from Spelman College, she earned a Master of Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate of Philosophy from Georgia State University. Additionally, Andrea completed a Certificate of Theology and Ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently working on a Master of Divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center – Turner Theological Seminary.
Andrea works in her professional career and personal endeavors to ensure that all children receive a strong educational foundation in their early years. Her professional experiences include elementary school teacher, public and private school administrator, and college faculty. Through her efforts as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Education Department at Spelman College, Andrea instills passion and purpose in her students who are future educators. She believes that educators must teach from the heart with passion and purpose to help all students reach their highest academic and personal potential.
Andrea has published three books Preservice Teachers, Social Class, and Race in Urban Schools: Experiences and Strategies for Teacher Preparation (Palgrave Macmillan), Valerie’s New Friends (Rathsi Publishing), and Unsung Legacies of Educators and Events in African American Education (co-authored, Palgrave Macmillan) as well as book chapters and articles in various books and journals.
Andrea is Past President of the Greater Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated and has held leadership positions in the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (national executive committee and Atlanta Chapter); Jack and Jill of America; Nu Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Pack 2020 Cub Scouts; and Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she has served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Andrea has received awards of distinction for exemplary community service and excellence in education from a multitude of organizations; however, her proudest accomplishment is being a mother to two intelligent and awesome boys, Christian and Alexander.
